Photoperiod or autoflower? The photoperiods give the full plant and the bigger yields, run on a timer and finish in 53–63 days, at listed THC 15–25%. The autoflower is listed at about 56 days seed to harvest and 22% THC, finishing on its own clock with no flip to time. For a first grow, the auto spares you the light timing.

Feminized or regular? With feminized seed every plant is a female, which saves the early sexing job. The two regular Trainwrecks here suit breeding or keeping a mother for cuttings.

Trainwreck photoperiod (feminized and regular)

The photoperiod versions are the full Trainwreck: you set the clock, with an 18-hour day in veg and a 12-hour day to flower, paying the control back in resin-drenched, spicy-scented flower. They finish in 53–63 days, with listed THC 15–25%. Heights are listed at 140–300 cm.

Trainwreck autoflower

The Trainwreck autoflower is the compact, hands-off way into a strain otherwise sold as taller photoperiods. An autoflower runs on its own clock from seed to harvest, no light schedule to flip and no timing mistake to make, and this one is among the quickest on the page. It is shorter than the 140–300 cm photoperiods, while keeping the spicy, piney, lemon-edged character. Listed THC on it is 22%, right in the middle of the photoperiod range, so it gives up little strength for the convenience. Fast Buds fold their own auto line onto the Trainwreck base to set the automatic clock. If you want Trainwreck without a light schedule or a tall plant, this is the version to look at; if you want the biggest listed yield or more versions to choose from, the photoperiods are the place to look.

How Trainwreck grows

Trainwreck leans sativa and can run tall, but it is not always the giant the name suggests. Fast Buds' auto stands at 120 cm, and Barney's describe theirs as a tidy medium plant, listed at 150 cm with a listed 641 g/m². The tall end is Herbies' feminized at 210 cm and Humboldt's two versions, both listed at 300 cm, so check your ceiling before you buy. Heights across the family run 120–300 cm, so read the height column first and give the taller photoperiods room to stretch.

Speed is the other draw. Herbies' Fast Version is listed at 53 days in flower, Humboldt's two cuts at 58 and Medicann's regular at 56. Fast Buds' auto is listed at 56 days from seed, one of the quickest finishes on the page, and the photoperiods run from 53 to 63 days in flower, so none of them is a long wait.

The finish is resinous, and that is the one thing to prepare for. Barney's note the long, elongated buds shimmer under light, that the resin coverage points to scissors that will need cleaning as you work rather than after, and that theirs is the sensible, well-balanced end of a classic name. So keep the trim tidy, give the tall cuts their space; the balanced, uplifting character arrives on a resinous harvest.

Where Trainwreck comes from

Trainwreck is a named cross with a landrace heart, and the catalogue is consistent about the make-up. The build is Mexican and Thai sativa landraces stabilised by an Afghani indica: Barney's Farm say the Afghani supplies the old-school ballast beneath the tropical lift of the other two. The name, by a rumour Fast Buds repeat, comes from a nearby trainwreck that forced an early harvest in the sixties. Breeders word the ratio differently, from an 80/20 indica build to a 20/80 sativa one, most sitting sativa-leaning around 40/60, which tells you how much the versions differ in the growing. Whichever ratio a breeder lists, the spicy, citrus-and-pine landrace character is the thread the versions share. Each version's page keeps its own.
