Seb's take

Seb Silverback

Skunk crossed with Afghan for bigger yields off smaller frames — a tidy trick, and rather the point of an XL that isn't. Sweet and fruity over an earthy base, the high starts up front in the head before settling into a relaxed, euphoric body buzz. Wants ventilation and a firm hand with defoliation.

Where it comes from

Royal Queen Seeds crossed Skunk #1 with Afghan for a specific and slightly mischievous end — bigger yields from smaller plants, which is rather the opposite of what 'XL' usually threatens. The Skunk side brings the vigour and the aroma, the Afghan the resin and the compact, sturdy structure. The result is a wide, productive plant that puts its size into flower rather than height. A neat piece of engineering, in short, and a name that means the harvest sooner than the stature.

Nose & flavour

Sweet and fruity over an earthy base — a rounded, approachable nose that softens the Skunk heritage rather than shouting it. The resinous flowers grow large and cover most of the stalks, the main cola especially, so the aroma gathers weight as she fills out. Pleasant and inviting, more fruit than funk despite the pedigree.

The high

It starts up front, in the head — a potent, aimed effect the record puts plainly — before transforming into a relaxed, euphoric body buzz. A two-part experience, then: bright and cerebral at the outset, settling and comfortable by the finish. Even-handed enough to suit most of an evening, and cheerful throughout.

Growing it

THC sits at 17%, with a medium CBD reading. She flowers in eight to nine weeks and usually holds to 60–100cm, though the record notes she can stretch toward a metre and a half or even two given her head — so give her the headroom if you have it. Yields are the headline: 600–650 g/m² of resinous flower, wide and heavy on the main cola. She wants proper ventilation and a firm hand with defoliation to keep humidity from settling in that dense canopy. Reward her attention and she crops well above her modest average height.
