How to grow The Black
Taste
Seb's take
Her genetics are, by the breeder's own admission, a mystery — grown somewhere between 1980s California and Vancouver Island and never explained since. Sweet, grape and fruity on the nose; the high is relaxed, sleepy and medicinal, good enough to earn a High Times Top 10 spot in 2008 despite the secrecy.
Where it comes from
The genetics of The Black are, by BC Bud Depot's own admission, a mystery — no parentage is recorded, and none has ever been convincingly offered. What's known is the geography: grown in 1980s California and on Vancouver Island in Canada, and little explained since. Ninety percent indica, and famous chiefly for the near-black colouring the name points to. High Times named it a Top 10 Strain of the Year in 2008, secrecy and all.
Nose & flavour
The nose is sweet and fruity with a distinct grape note — dark and rich, matching the deep colouring of the plant. More jam than citrus, the grape leading a sweet, fruited profile. Sweet up front, the grape giving it depth and a slightly wine-like character. A rich aroma that suits so heavily indica a plant.
The high
At sixteen percent THC the effect is a heavy, restful one — relaxed sliding into sleepy, the near-total indica dominance settling firmly into the body. The sitting-down sort, best kept for the end of the day. Enough weight to close out an evening comfortably. You won't be needed elsewhere once it takes hold.
Growing it
Flowering runs fifty-six to seventy days. The record sets down neither a height nor a yield, so I'll invent neither — the mystery that surrounds the genetics extends, it seems, to the grow notes. What the ninety-percent indica dominance suggests is a shorter, stockier frame, but I'll leave that as inference rather than fact. A plant that keeps its secrets from the grower as thoroughly as from everyone else.
